DIPHU, April 16: Altogether 15,000 LPG Panchayats will be organised by the ministry of petroleum and natural gas (MoPNG) under the aegis of Gram Swaraj Abhiyan on the occasion of ‘Ujjwala Diwas’ on the theme ‘Kuch seekhein, kuch sikhayein’ on April 20, district nodal officer of Prime Minister Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), Susibrat Sarma told reporters here on Saturday.
There will be eight LPG Panchayats organised by the eight LPG distributors in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, he said. These LPG panchayats will be organised for women LPG consumers to promote a safe and sustainable use of LPG in rural areas, Sarma also said.
“LPG Panchayat is a community platform for women LPG consumers to interact with each other and sharing of experiences on the use of LPG. Each LPG Panchayat aims to bring together about 500 women from neighbouring areas, thus providing platform for Ujjwala LPG users to share information on how to use LPG safely, as well as spread the message of its multiple benefits like health, environment and women empowerment,” he also said.
“On Ujjwala Diwas, we are inviting MLAs and executive members (EMs) of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to interact with women beneficiaries. A 100 LPG connection under PMUY for BPL women beneficiaries will be distributed on that day,” the nodal officer further said.
Promoting PMUY LPG subsidy scheme for BPL families was launched on May 1, 2017, for BPL families to help them free from the hardships they endure while cooking with firewood.
Sarma informed that on the basis of socio economic caste census, 2011, the Centre has expanded PMUY implementation modalities, where the BPL family should come under the categories of SC/ST households, benefits of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin) and Antyodaya Anna Yojana, should be forest dwellers, most backward classes, tea and ex-tea garden tribes and people residing on island and river islands. PMUY was implemented in Karbi Anglong from October 18, 2017.
