IMPHAL, Oct 11: Manipur chief minister N Biren Singh hailed the Indian Football Team for their wonderful performance in the ongoing U-17 World Cup.
Addressing closing ceremony of Manipur Police Quasquicentennial Football Cup 2017 held under the aegis of Police Department in connection with its 125th Anniversary at 2nd MR Ground, Imphal on Tuesday, Biren said that apart from some technical know-how on how to play in crucial moments and more maturely, the overall performance of the Team is good.
Considering the football talents and their representation in the country’s football clubs at various international tournaments, he said state government would develop 2-3 playgrounds by laying artificial turf in the state soon so that the players could play football all around the year/seasons.
Manipur contributes as many as 8 players in the 21-member Indian football squad participating in the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup which is being played across six venues in the country since October 6.
Lamenting that if Guwahati can host the World Cup match then why Manipur was not given an opportunity to host even a single match of the ongoing FIFA U-17 World Cup 2017,Biren who himself was once a national football player said, Manipur should have been given an opportunity to host at least a match of U-17 World Cup 2017.
He urged the different Sports Associations to step forward and co-ordinate with the government to nurture potential players.
In his speech, Sports minister Letpao Haokip said that it is very delightful and heartening to see that 8 players from the state are representing the country at the U-17 FIFA World Cup 2017. Manipur is very much fertile in the field of sports, he added.
The final match was played between the Imphal East District Police and Thoubal /Kakching District Police team.
Meanwhile Jackson’s father Deben Thounaojam (53) after watching his son’s historic performance during the India-Columbia match on Monday night, speaking to The Hills Times reporter on phone on Tuesday said, “We are so happy for a moment thinking that the result of the match will be a draw. But it was shattered after their (Columbia) victory score.” “I feel sorry about it,” he added.
