KHERONI, May 3: The police resorted to lathi charge and fired rubber bullets to disperse an irate mob which gheraoed a medicine shop at Hamren in West Karbi Anglong district on Wednesday evening.
One person was injured in the incident. Altogether 12 protesters were booked but later released all on personal bonds, police said.
The incident took place following reopening of a pharmacy belonging to one Pradip Roy in Hamren, which was earlier closed by a local organisation for selling contraband drugs.
The owner of the pharmacy Pradip Roy was caught red handed with a consignment of drugs that are commonly abused by police when he was returning from Hojai on March 16. He was sent to jail. Following the incident, the Karbi Students Association (KSA) demanded shutting of the pharmacy saying that they would not allow any anti-social act in the area.
However, a mob gathered outside the pharmacy which was re-opened on Wednesday evening. The mob also vandalised the pharmacy, brought out the medicines and set fire on it.
The mob also marched towards Hamren police station and gheraoed it protesting against the police for allowing Roy to reopen his pharmacy.
