Guwahati, Oct 10: Prof. Jagdish Mukhi was sworn-in as the 30th governor of Assam at a formal ceremony held at Srimanta Sankardeva Kalakshetra in Guwahati on Tuesday. Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Justice Ajit Singh administered oath of office to the new governor.
Attending the swearing-in ceremony, chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated Mukhi on assuming the gubernatorial post of Assam and wished that under his leadership the state government would accelerate the growth momentum of the state. Finance, health and education minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, trade and commerce minister Chandra Mohan Patowary, agriculture minister Atul Bora, irrigation minister Ranjit Dutta, PHE minister Rihon Daimary, power minister Pallab Lochan Das, former chief minister Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, MP Bijoya Chakraborty were also present at the swearing in ceremony. Chief Justice of Calcutta High Court Rakesh Tiwari, chief secretary VK Pipersenia, DGP Mukesh Sahay and a number of senior officers of the administration both civil and police were also present at the swearing in ceremony.
After taking charge, Mukhi visited Kamakhya Temple and offered Puja to goddess Kamakhya for the welfare of all sections of the people of the state. Later, he went to Dr Bhupen Hazarika Samadhi and offered floral tributes to the bard.
Prior to his appointment, Mukhi was the Lieutenant Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Mukhi earlier held the portfolios of finance, planning, excise and taxation and higher education in Delhi government. He is credited with working extensively for the welfare of the people of Delhi.
Some of the notable achievements credited to Mukhi’s name were banning of lottery trade etc in Delhi in 1994, when he was the minister of finance. He also worked towards persuading people to abstain from consuming alcohol. As minister of excise, he declared record number of dry days in a year. He was also instrumental in establishing Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University a professional university which was self funded, as a minister of higher education. He was also honoured as the best finance minister of the nation and also received best MLA award in Delhi Vidhan Sabha for two times.
He represented Janak Puri constituency continuously from 1980 and won seven times from the same constituency. Mukhi was born to Late JR Mukhi and Late Laxi Devi Mukhi on December 1, 1942.
