DIPHU, May 4: A thunderstorm followed by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Diphu town by disrupting road communication besides snapping power lines on Friday.
Many tress were uprooted, broken branches fell on power cables and snapped the power supply. It also blew away a part of the roof of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) Secretariat just after five days of its inauguration.
The storm which lasted for 40 minutes also blew away tin roofing sheets of many houses. Moreover, rain water flooded many homes in the hill town. The severely affected areas are Achom Kimi, Rongmonjir and Checharlangso. In Agriculture Colony, the house of one Sarat Deka was damaged when a tree fell on his house. Deka informed that no was injured as he was not at home and his mother was also in the kitchen when the tree fell.
The storm also hit at the KAAC Secretariat building causing severe damage to it. The GI sheets at the top of the building were torn away and thrown down to the ground.
A big tree fall down In Diphu Civil Hospital premises and smashed three cars. However, there was no report of casualty in the incident.
The power cable in front of DC’s residence was also snapped by falling tree branches.
Many roads were blocked due to the storm till filing this report. ASEB men are at work to restore power supply in the hill town.
