GUWAHATI, Nov 9: Women’s India Chamber of Commerce and Industry (WICCI) launched its handloom council in Assam under the leadership of Shaheen Hussain, state president, Assam Handloom Council and Pinki Hazarika the vice-president.
The digital launch of the council was inaugurated by chief guest Swapnanil Barua, IAS, retd former commissioner of industries and commerce, Govt. of Assam. Kabita Deka, director, handloom and textile, was the guest of honour at the launch.
In the event, a campaign was launched ‘Hands Behind the Looms’ by Alakananda Das, president, India-Bangladesh Business Council WICCI and social entrepreneur.
A panel discussion was conducted on Assam textile in the global arena with panellists Indira R Kalita, ACS, designer Julie Kagti, cultural narrator Shantana Saikia, entrepreneurs Ishita Das and Madhu Jain. The discussion was moderated by Arita Kashyap Bhowmik, vice-president, Handloom Council WICCI.
The vision of the Assam Handloom Council WICCI is to restore, preserve and promote indigenous weaves of Assam and make these artisans stakeholders in the economic growth of the state.
