“Sculpture is the best comment that a painter can make on painting.”
Right after independence, the people of the country have been mostly under the ‘dynastic’ rule of Nehru-Gandhi family. Post assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, the extended family of the Nehru-Gandhi came into the limelight for all the wrong reasons. The son-in-law of Sonia Gandhi Robert Vadra’s name cropped up whenever one talks of corruption and the Congress party. Although Vadra tried his best to be accepted by the public, it seems he failed spectacularly. Now, his name is in the headlines again. Businessman Robert Vadra, husband of Sonia’s daughter Priyanka Gandhi, faces a double fire with simultaneous developments in Harayna and Rajasthan. The Punjab and Haryana High Court is speeding up a trial which can open a can of worms for Vadra while the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has filed FIRs against companies linked to him in a property case in Rajasthan.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) began to probe into 18 cases referred to it by the Rajasthan government for alleged irregularities in land deals in Bikaner by companies, including one linked to Robert Vadra. The FIRs lodged by the CBI are basically re-registration of FIRs filed by Rajasthan police in connection with the land deal cases. The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has been conducting a probe into alleged money laundering in the Kolayat land deals- the agency did not mention the name of Vadra or any company linked to him in its FIR and Vadra’s lawyers have in the past rejected allegations that he was linked to the deal. The Rajasthan government had written to the CBI for a probe into the alleged land scams in Bikaner, including those involving a company linked to Vadra.
The case involved 1,400 bighas of land in fake names. Vadra’s company allegedly was involved as the third party to purchase 275 bighas of land in 2010 and sold it to a fourth party in 2012. In its complaint, the tehsildar of Kolyat had alleged that government land in 34 villages of Bikaner district that was meant to be used for expanding the Army’s firing range, was grabbed by the land mafia. This land grab, the complainant claimed, took place through forged and fabricated documents in collusion with certain government officials. There is the usual glamour of accusing the ruling party of a witch hunt with Congress president Sachin Pilot saying that the BJP has misused CBI, ED and other agencies for political gains. In this alleged land scam case, the state government had formed a committee but the committee’s findings were not disclosed by the government. Pilot alleged that those who arrested in the land scam are connected with BJP instead of the Congress. There are similar allegations against Vadra in Harayana. The CBI should investigate the cases in priority so that it will do justice to Robert Vadra. The nation needs a break from the usual opposition party accusing the ruling party of using the CBI to settle political scores. If there is any shady deals let it come out in the open as soon as possible. No one should be allowed to just keep the allegations boiling for the political gain. For that matter, all other cases involving high profile politically link cases should be investigated on priority basis so that there is no doubt in the mind of the electorate.
