“The true adventurer goes forth aimless and uncalculating to meet and greet unknown fate.”

-O. Henry

The BJP, riding on the back of PM Narendra Modi’s popularity has been winning election after election. The party has unseated the Left from Tripura, that has been a red citadel for 25 years, and formed governments in Nagaland and helped in clubbing up a coalition in Meghalaya to keep out the Congress from power. The performance of the BJP was superb. However their loss in the UP and Bihar Lok Sabha and assembly by-polls has put a large dent on the party’s confidence. It lost four of the five seats in the bypolls. It lost the prestigious Gorakhpur and Phulpur seats in the state of Uttar Pradesh. In Uttar Pradesh the loss is a lot worrisome for the BJP as it has lost to BSP backed Samajwadi Party. The arithmetic has finally dawned on the opposition parties that it is a matter of survival rather than keeping its principles intact and the BJP’s arrogance has probed people to cut it down to size. After the win in Uttar Pradesh assembly elections last year this is something unexpected for the ruling party. Gorakhpur was earlier held by chief minister Yogi Adityanath and deputy chief minister Keshav Prasad Maurya had held the Phulpur seat. Earlier the BJP has lost to Congress in the local body bypolls in Rajasthan. In the local body election in Rajasthan, the Congress won four of six zila parishad seats, and 12 of the 20 panchayat samiti seats and four of the six municipal seats.

The BJP won just one zila parishad seat, eight panchayat samiti seats and two municipality body seats in the bi-elections. The Congress in Rajasthan is already saying that it is time for the BJP to go from the state. After the losses in Uttar Pradesh, the chief minister Yogi Adityanath said that it is the inability to understand the understanding between SP and BSP and the overconfidence of BJP that led to this inglorious defeat. In the 2019 Lok Sabha election a scenario may come where the BJP will be swamp on all sides by an anti BJP alliance. The Congress is not going to lose a chance to jump into the bandwagon. BSP is also likely to keep its cool and will be amenable to such an idea. However the present electoral result is not an overall indication of what is coming for the BJP. It is rather an indication of people’s frustration and gave a message that it can strike back when it wants.

In Uttar Pradesh, the BJP was solely banking on chief minister Yogi Adityanath along with the adverse affects of anti-Dalit violence and activities of gaurakshaks. The BJP that was doing so good so far should realise that India needs a party that is all inclusive. The BJP came to power as the people desire change but now it has given a message that it should not be at the cost of giving up freedom of speech and polarization of the society and not at the cost of giving up one’s political leanings. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath should be rein-in and the party leadership should point out his mistakes, which should not find a place in the country’s governance.
