GUWAHATI/ DIPHU, March 2: Holi was celebrated across Assam and Northeast along with the rest of the country with enthusiasm as people on Friday applied colours on each other, savoured sweets and exchanged greetings to send out a message of cultural harmony.
From morning, revellers thronged streets smearing faces with coloured powder and children hurled water-filled balloons from balconies and rooftops to celebrate the festival of colours which heralds the advent of spring. People hugged each other wishing ‘Happy Holi’ as roads were filled with groups singing and dancing to the accompaniment of drums.
In Diphu town people have come out from home on the road to celebrate Holi by smearing colours on each other faces. Local MAC and EM Ratan Teron joined the celebration with the party workers. Karbi Anglong SP Dr GV Seva Prasad said apart from several stray incidents, the celebration was peaceful. The district administration has declared local holiday on Friday. In Bokajan also the Holi was celebrated.
In Guwahati, the festival of colours was celebrated with traditional fanfare. The smell of gulal and joyous spirit pervaded streets as people in the city exchanged greeting and savoured festive dishes ‘malpua’, ‘dahibada’ and ‘gujiya’.
