Probe incident in first track court, demand social bodies

DIPHU, April 23: Social organisations in Karbi Anglong condemned the burning of a 12-year old girl at Raha in Nagaon district on April 22.

The deceased minor was staying as a domestic help in the house of Prakash Chandra Borthakur, a retired bank employee at Raha. It is alleged that on April 22, Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur tortured her and then burnt her by pouring kerosene over her body.

Both Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur were arrested and a case has been registered with Nagaon police station case no. 97/2021 under Section 120B/302 of IPC Schedule Caste and Scheduled Tribe (Atrocities and Prevention Act).

In Diphu, various women, student and social organisations have condemned the incident and demanded immediate and appropriate action against the culprits.

Chairperson of Women Commission and MAC of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Seema Ronghangpi, while condemning the incident has demanded justice for the victim.

“It is a heinous crime committed by the Borthakur family by torturing tge minor girl and killing her. It is learnt that Prakash Chandra Borthakur and his son Nayan Jyoti Borthakur while torturing her have poured kerosene on her body and burned her alive,” Ronghangpi said in her Facebook post.

Karbi Students Association led by president Simeon Rongphar, Karbi Anglong Women Justice Forum and United Karbi Anglong Women Association have demanded a high level enquiry in the incident to punish the culprits. The case should be heard by a fast track court and demanded a compensation of Rs. 20 lakh to the victim’s family.

In Bokajan, Asom Jatiyatabadi Chatra Parishad (AJCP), Karbi Anglong District Committee (KADC) held a memorial for the deceased who was burnt alive at Raha, Nagaon. The AJCP held the programme at 5:30 pm at Samson Sing Engti statue in Bokajan.

President of AJCP Jitu Phukon condemned the killing of the minor and said that the father-son Borthakur duo should be brought to justice. AJYCP also demands compensation for the victim’s kin.

Meanwhile the minor’s body has reached the victim’s family on Friday.

The Autonomous State Demand Committee also condemned the killing of the minor.
