2,000 people to storm Delhi streets on Autonomous State demand on Dec 19

DIPHU, Dec 14: More than two thousand representatives of social organisations board on a train from Diphu to travel to the national capital to take part in a protest rally demanding creation of an Autonomous State for Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao under Article 244(a) of the Constitution of India. A train has been booked to board the protestors from Diphu to Delhi for the rally to pressurise the Centre for creation of Autonomous State.

The social organisation will take out a protest rally in New Delhi on December 19 during the winter session of Parliament. “Our demand is to implement the Article 244(a) of the Constitution of India. More than 2,000 people are taking part in the journey,” Karbi Anglong and NC Hills Autonomous State Demand committee (KANCHASDCOM) president Ajit Timung told reporters.

Karbi Anglong chef executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang, North Cachar Hills Autonomous council (NCHAC) CEM Debolal Gorlosa, KAAC chairman Horensing Bey, Lok Sabha MP Birensing Engti are expected to take part in the rally.

“The Autonomous state is a long standing demand of people of Karbi Anglong,” Timung said. Apart from KANCHASDCOM, leaders of KARSA, KSA, KRA in Karbi Anglong and All Dimasa Students Union (ADSU), Dimasa Mother Association, Dimasa Women Society (DWS) are also taking part in the journey,” Timung said.

Timung further said, “It is very unfortunate that the demand and aspiration of the hill tribes of Assam for Autonomous State has not been fulfilled by successive governments because we have been demanding since 32 years in democratic and non violent manner.”

“Article 244 (A) which was inserted in the Constitution of India through the Twenty-second Amendment Act, 1969, confer the necessary legislative power on Parliament to enact a law for constituting the autonomous State and also to provide the autonomous State with a Legislature and a Council of Ministers with such powers and functions as may be defined by that law,” Timung added.
