First COVID-19 positive case in NE: Manipur under curfew
IMPHAL, March 24: A 23-year-old girl from Imphal West district of Manipur who returned home from UK has been tested positive for COVID-19, making it the first positive case of the North Eastern Indian states on Tuesday.
This led to the imposition of indefinite curfew in all the districts of Manipur as a part of intensification campaign against the dreaded COVID-19 that cost the lives of over 16,500 persons as of Tuesday.
Giving his message on the dreaded coronavirus which started spreading in the state, chief minister N Biren Singh on Tuesday said that the girl developed the first sign of the illness two days ago and on Tuesday morning she was declared as 2019-nCoV ‘Positive’ when test was carried out serological test at the Jawaharlal Nehru Institute of Medical Sciences (JNIMS), Imphal.
The second and final Nucleic acid test is to be conducted for confirmation which is to be performed outside the state.
Vina Ningol (name changed), a student of Brisal University, UK, has come back from London and arrived at Delhi and Kolkata on March 19. Her brother who studied in Atlanta (the US) had also joined her from Atlanta at the Kolkata Airport where they stayed at a hotel there and then arrived in Imphal on March 21.
She came by Air Asia. So, the state government has started checking the flight manifesto of who all were sharing the flights so that police trace them and see if anyone has developed the same infection or not.
At least 400 passengers would be traced, the superintendent of police (SP), Imphal West district said. The family members of the girl have also attended a marriage ceremony, which signals at the possibility of a lot many getting infected. It is also further reported that one of her close friends has also been quarantined following sign and symptom of this dreaded virus.
Dr K Rajo Singh, director of health services, Manipur said she is under care and treatment at JNIMS Isolation ward. All of her family members are also placed under the quarantine.
Tracing of her contacts is important and anyone who came in contact with this person is to be informed the director of health services, Manipur and start self-isolation immediately until further instructions.
Meanwhile, Manipur government has imposed curfew in all the districts from 8 am on Tuesday until further order as a part of taking measure to contain this dreaded virus. But there is no report of untoward incident so far. All roads in the state wore deserted look.
The chief minister reiterated his appeals the people to stay indoors, distance themselves from any person and not to enjoy the social stigma attached to the Manipuri society. Police also cordoned off the house of the girl from the morning on Tuesday. In few of the accelerating virus, almost the lane and by lanes in the state and villages have been blocked with the written word, “Road blockade.”
