DIPHU, May 17: Representatives of 24 social organisations have demanded eviction of Bangladeshi nationals illegally settled in Kang-ar Terang Village bordering Lumding in Hojai district.

The organisations also demanded the Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) to take up development schemes in the village and demolish all the structures constructed by Hojai district administration in the village, which falls under the jurisdiction of Karbi Anglong.

A delegation of 24 organisations comprising adviser JI Kathar and convenor Ratan Terang, Semson Teron, Rajesh Tisso, Longkumar Bey, Longson Ingjai and Depen Rongpi visited the Kang-ar Terang and expressed their anguish over the inaction of the council to improve the infrastructure of the village.

In a joint statement here on Thursday, the organisations said that the Kang-ar Terang village was established 250 years back and it was included in the territory of the erstwhile Mikir Hills district in 1951. However, many people had to leave the village following an epidemic sixty years ago.

Presently, thousands of Bangladeshi families settled in the village illegally occupying the lands at the behest of the officials of Nagaon district administration (now Hojai district).

The illegal settlers entered into four kilometre inside of Karbi Anglong and claimed the area to be of Hojai district. The organisation alleged that the district administration has provided all basis amenities to the illegal settlers.

The organisations further stated that many of the Karbis who had left the village but now started returning to the village, were forced to leave the area by forest officials. The illegal settlers also occupied paddy fields of the Karbis, they alleged.

The joint statements informed that the illegal settlers had burnt down two houses and destroyed three other houses of the Karbis in the village in 2017. The electric transformer in Kang-ar Terang village was installed by MLA of Lumding and MLA of Diphu has no knowledge of it.

In 2015, KAAC set up Rongmili Model Village, but the council has not taken any scheme for improvement of infrastructure of the model village, they alleged.
