3 dies, 2 hurt as massive tree falls on road near Raj Bhawan

SHILLONG, Aug 12: At least three persons were killed and two others injured when a massive tree in Raj Bhawan compound in Shillong uprooted and fell on a few cars plying on the road at around 5 pm on Saturday.

A rescue operation was launched immediately to retrieve persons trapped underneath the tree and inside the cars.

“Three persons died of their injuries while two persons sustained injury in the mishap. The bodies are yet to be identified,” East Khasi Hills SP Davis Marak told reporters here.

The old tree which stood outside the Raj Bhavan for decades came crashing across the road down pulling along with it electric posts and wires and crushed  vehicles.

One of the local taxis which was completely crushed (registration no. yet to be found out) reportedly had two occupants while the other two vehicles with registration numbers ML 06-4171 and ML 05 P- 0643 which were also damaged reportedly had five occupants.

Five occupants of two of the taxis were rushed to Shillong Civil Hospital while the local taxi whose registration number is yet to be known and which was still stuck  underneath the massive tree is yet to pulled out. Emergency services are still trying to pull the people out of the vehicle crushed by the age-old tree.
