MARGHERITA, May 16: Three ULFA (I) activists identified as Captain Bubul Moran alias Tiger Asom, Lt Col Binondo Dahotia alias Swadesh Asom and Pvt Chandrakant Borgohain alias Tipong Asom were apprehended by an army column from Tarani Reserve Forest in Tinsukia district on Tuesday evening, a defense spokesperson here said.
Based on intelligence inputs on the activists of ULFA (I) having crossed over the Indo Myanmar border for carrying out subversive acts in upper Assam, a joint operation was launched by the troops of Indian Army and the police.
“Sustained and intense pressure was exerted which prevented these cadres from getting in touch with their over ground workers to execute their tasks. Extensive and deliberate efforts were made to convince them to give up their arms and surrender.” the spokesman said adding, “Their families and friends were also contacted to influence them to surrender and save their lives. The efforts of security forces resulted in these activists realising the futility of their situation and they finally surrendered to the Army and police without a fight.”
One each of AK 56, AK-81 and HK rifles have been recovered from them. Apart from these weapons, two hand grenades, nine magazines and 425 rounds of ammunition were also recovered.
