GUWAHATI, Sept 13: Assam government has taken back over 40 thousand beneficiary cards under National Food Security Act (NFSA). Participating in an AIR news talk show on Tuesday night, food and civil supply minister Rihon Daimary said that these cards have been taken back from beneficiaries as they didn’t fulfil the criteria of being a beneficiary.

Daimary said that the beneficiaries annual income should not exceed Rs 1 lakh, but several people were getting food items illegally. He said that drive against such beneficiaries would be continued. The minister said that rice at subsidised rate under NFSA will be continued in Assam as Aadhar Card is yet to roll out in the state to get benefit of DBT.

Daimary who is also holding the charge of PHE said that over 5,000 villages have been declared Open Defecation Free (ODF) under Swacch Bharat Mission. He said that by 2020, Assam will be made free from arsenic and fluoride as several districts are facing problems. The minister said that Assam will be declared Open Defecation Free by 2019.
