49 Gold Bars Worth Rs 4 Cr Seized in Karbi Anglong

Bokajan, Dec 11: In a major breakthrough, the Karbi Anglong police on Saturday seized over 8 kg of smuggled gold near Dillai Tiniali.

The consignment was recovered from a car bearing registration number AS-01-EV-2350. The vehicle was reportedly heading towards Guwahati from Manipur.

As per reports, the Dillai police intercepted the SUV during a routine checking and on verifying the documents, a home guard identified as Maising Tokbi who was checking the vehicle doubted the conduct of the driver.

On cross checking the car, the home guard recovered 4 packets wrapped in black tarpaulin containing 49 gold bars having a value of Rs 4 crore in the market.

Tokbi was offered a bribe by the smugglers which he refused to accept and he immediately reported the matter to his superior officer.

The gold bars were concealed near the engine of the vehicle.

Police have arrested two persons identified as Prakash Basnet (32) and Subhash Bista (24) in this connection. Both are residents of Manipur.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the seized gold bars were supposed to be delivered at Guwahati.

The gold bars were seized and sealed in presence of independent witnesses under the physical supervision of John Das, APS, SDPO Bokajan assisted by OC Bokajan Mwblik Brahma and staff.
