UDALGURI, Nov 20: In a road mishap, eight passengers of a wedding convoy car were killed after a Maruti Ertiga car (AS12V 9333) in which they were travelling in hit a stationary truck (AS12B 2022) in Orang near Gelabil over the NH-15 in Udalguri at about 3 am on Wednesday.
Police later retrieved the bodies lying in a pool of blood as all the passengers succumbed to their injuries and a crane had to be deployed to pull the damaged vehicle. The ill fated car, which was headed for Tezpur from Baihata Charali in Kamrup (R), was returning from a wedding celebration as per sources in the Orang police.
“The vehicle left early from the bride’s place in Baihata Charali and fatally crashed behind a stationary truck, foggy weather is suspected to be the reason behind the accident,” said Orang PS in-charge, Dipak Das.
“Meanwhile the post-mortem reports are awaited to ascertain if they were under the influence of alcohol,” Das added.
The deceased have been identified as Diganta Saikia, Pinku Saikia, Ranjit Deka, Partha Kuri, Narayan Das, Tinku Bora and Kand Deb and Dipak Mech. As per reports, most of them hailed from Tezpur and Thelamara in Sonitpur district. A pall of gloom have descended in the locality where the tragic mishap occurred.
Meanwhile, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal has also offered condolences over the tragic incident.
