80.96% voter turnout in 2nd phase of polls

GUWAHATI, April 2: The state has recorded a total of 80.96% voter turnout in the second phase of the assembly elections held on April 1, an official of the state election department here said on Friday.

The voting for the second phase was held in 39 constituencies spread over 13 districts of Barak Valley, three hills district, and parts of central and lower Assam.

A total of 345 candidates in 39 constituencies are in the fray. The main contest is seen to be between the alliances led by BJP and Congress.

Over 73.44 lakh voters were eligible to cast their votes in the second phase. Of them, 37,34,537 are male and 36,09,959 female voters, while 135 are third gender voters.

The last phase of the assembly election will be held on April 6, in 40 constituencies.

Meanwhile, to raise awareness among the voters, the Bongaigaon district has created a national record on Friday by planting 32,000 saplings in Kakoijana Reserve Forest in Bongaigaon district with a record time of 32 minutes.

The special initiative of district election officer Ms Lakshmi Priya was undertaken as a part of Systematic Voters Education and Electoral Participation (SVEEP) programme going on for awareness generation amongst the voters for maximum participation in the Assembly Election.

With the spirit and the theme “Grow with Democracy”, more than 1500 voters participated in the plantation drive to create awareness for greater electoral participation.

Indigenous species including fruit bearing trees like Amlakhi, Bohera, Jam, Gamari, Koroi, Silikha, Bhatghila, Khasia Badam, Poma, Modhuriam, Leteku, Kothal, Arjun, Urium, Ajar, Bokul, Debdaru, Ashok, Moz, Amora, Koros, Kanchan, Jalpai, Teteli, Ponial, Sotiona, which are also a source of food for Golden Langur, the official election Mascot of Bongaigaon Election District were planted in the reserve forest which is also a natural habitat for Golden Langur.

80.39 % turnout in 16-Haflong

A total of 80.39 per cent voter turnout has been recorded in the 16-Haflong constituency in Dima Hasao district.

Out of total 1,46,183 voters cast their votes in 246 polling stations across the hill district.

A total of four candidates are in the fray from the constituency.

988 polling officials along with 492 security personnel, 67 sector officers and 11 zonal officers braved heavy rainfall and difficult terrain to reach their designated polling stations to perform their poll duties.

81.25% polling in Nagaon

81.25 percent final voter turnout was recorded in Nagaon election district during the second phase of voting on Thursday.

In Raha constituency, 81.63 percent voter turnout was recorded, 80.05 percent turnout has been recorded in Barhampur constituency.

85.13% polling in Darrang

85.13 percent voter turnout has been recorded in four assembly segments of Mangaldai election district during the second phase of elections. Of 8,38,958 total voters, 7,14,219 voters have exercised their democratic rights.

In 65-Kalaigaon, of 1,83,507 total electorates, 1,48,342 cast their votes.

Of the 1,77,782 total voters in 66-Sipajhar, 1,48,042 voters took part in the poll making the turnover at 83.27%.

67-Mangaldai (SC) constituency marked the turnout of 85.71% with the participation of 2,03,130 voters out of 2,36,985 total voters.

68-Dalgaon constituency witnessed a turnout of 89.21% as a total of 2,14,705 voters out of 2,40,684 voters had participated in the polls.
