85.20% turnout in 3rd phase, state records 82.04% poll

GUWAHATI, April 7: A total of 85.20% voter turnout was registered during the third and final phase of assembly elections conducted on Tuesday, an official statement of state election department said here on Wednesday.

In the three-phased polls for 126 constituencies, the state witnessed 79.93 per cent polling on 47 seats during the first phase on March 27, 80.96 per cent on 39 seats during the second phase on April 1 and 85.20 per cent on 40 seats during the third phase of poll.

The overall polling percentage in all the three phases is 82.04 per cent.

The poll process peacefully concluded in the assembly election. Assam chief electoral officer (CEO) Nitin Khade thanked everyone for extending their cooperation and support to conduct the poll successfully.

In a statement Khade said, “The dedicated efforts by the polling officers and staff, response by the voters and all stakeholders have resulted in conducting a free, fair and safe election.”

Every effort was made to reach out to a total of 2,33,74,087 electors of the state, which resulted in active participation of voters from all sections of the society.

This time, women’s participation in the election is remarkable. 80.63% of total women voters exercised their franchise.

The office of the CEO introduced automations in certain selected processes to manage the robust election process. Software applications were being put to use as a part of the Information Communication Technology (ICT) in order to ensure a free, fair and safe election.

Under the supervision of the Election Commission of India (ECI), round the clock vigilance was maintained by Assam Police, State Excise Department, Income Tax Department, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Narcotics Control Bureau, Flying Squads, Static Surveillance Teams (SST) and other regulatory agencies to detect any suspicious movement of cash, liquor, valuables, narcotics etc. across the poll-bound state. This has resulted in total seizure of cash, liquor, drugs and narcotics worth Rs. 122.33 crore.

Khade further stated that all arrangements were done to quickly replace any EVMs which reported technical glitches to ensure a smooth poll process. Zonal/ sector officers concerned were allotted the duty for such replacements, as and when required. The EVM/VVPAT replacement is less than 2%.

Khade has also condoled the demise of the polling personnel on duty and extended his condolences to members of the bereaved family of the irreparable loss.

He added that strong vigilance has been put in place and assured all concerned about the safety, security and sanctity of the Strong Rooms till the counting day.
