IMPHAL, Sept 21 (Newmai): Troubles have returned to haunt Manipur University as police detained about 90 students after a midnight raid at the boy’s hostel of the varsity on Thursday.
Police raided the hostel after the pro-vice chancellor K Yogindro Singh reportedly lodged an FIR with Imphal Police Station alleging that the students of the university assaulted him.
Singh was appointed as the pro-vice chancellor after AP Pandey was suspended by the authority last week as the students and teachers of the varsity continued to demand his ouster.
According to sources, police personnel in large number swoop down the men’s hostel of the university at around 1 am and conducted a search in the hostel. The police were reported to have come to raid the hostel with a long list of students and teachers.
Police also resorted to lathi charge and burst tear gas shell to disperse the students who obstructed police entry into the varsity campus
Sources said that five to six faculty members of the university have also been detained in the raid.
Following this incident, security measures have been tightened in the state capital as precautionary measure.
All the 90 persons detained are still in the custody of police.
Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA), Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) and Manipur University Student Union (MUSU) lifted their 85-day-long agitation after August 16 agreement, according to which AP Pandey was supposed to be on leave during the enquiry period.
The MUSA, MUTA and MUSU had demanded enquiry into the “administrative and financial irregularities” in the management of the university under AP Pandey. The three organisations also accused Pandey, of taking frequent leave.
