MARGHERITA, Dec 11: All Adivasi Students Association of Assam (AASAA) Tinsukia District Committee on Saturday submitted a memorandum to the advisor of McLeod Russel India Ltd., Margherita Tea Estate regarding various burning problems that the tea garden workers are suffering since many decades.
Ramanus Lakra, general secretary of AASAA Tinsukia District Committee said that it has been 75 years since India became an independent nation, but the workers of tea gardens of Assam are still exploited, cheated and are deprived of their basic rights. Only during the time of election, the political leaders come and visit us to get votes from us.
It is very unfortunate that the women worker in tea gardens are the backbone of the state’s economy but are living a pathetic life because of gender discrimination alleged Ramanus Lakra.
AASAA since its formation has been raising our voice for the development of tea garden workers of Assam. They have demanded the advisor of McLeod Russel India Ltd. to construct the Margherita Dirok-Lekhajan road, Margherita to Namtok – Philkhaana road which is in deplorable condition.
“AASAA demanded Boucher pay scale to the retired tea garden workers and jobs to the educated youth of Margherita Tea Estate, Dehing Tea Estate, Namdang Tea Estate and Dirok Tea Estate. We have also demanded doctors at all the tea estates in Margherita circle as there is only one doctor in each tea estate working day and night. To construct the quarters and lavatories in the tea estate of Margherita Circle for many decades management has not done any renovation and repair works and the workers have been living in a bad condition,” said Ramanus Lakra.
