GOLAGHAT, May 23: Tensions gripped Golaghat town after an AASU leader was attacked by some traders in Golaghat on Tuesday night.
Ratul Dutta, a senior leader and adviser of All Assam Students Union Golaghat district unit was allegedly beaten by a group of traders on Tuesday night. The traders alleged that the student leader demanded money from them. After this incident sharp reactions were seen among the people.
On Wednesday some unidentified miscreants vandalised several shops in Golaghat town. Meanwhile, the AASU leader stated that Anup Gupta, a business man of the town along with his ten to fifteen member gang had beaten him near the Railway station in Golaghat on Tuesday night and snatched away his belongings. The police had detained Anup Gupta, Rohit Gupta, Sunil Gupta and Amar Nath Gupta in this regard. Rohit Gupta told that the student leader came to their house and demanded money and misbehaved with his family members. Soon several people gathered in the area and they thrashed the leader.
On the other hand, Golaghat AASU leaders has denied such allegations and stated that Anup Gupta had stolen some clothes from a shop which was captured in the CCTV footage. The owner of that shop along with Ratul Dutta went to Anup Gupta’s house and they recovered the stolen clothes. Then the alleged thief tried to compromise the case and tactfully called Ratul Dutta near the Railway station in Golaghat last night and when Dutta reached there they attacked him. However mix reactions were seen regarding this matter in Golaghat.
Central assistant secretary of AASU Manowar Hussain condemned the incident and had demanded the arrest of the culprits.
On the other hand, organising secretary Raju Phukan said, “If police do not arrest the remaining culprits than situation will go more tensed through protest. He added, “I hope that no political authority is involved in the incident and trying to break the communal harmony among the people.”
The family members too have lodged a complaint against Ratul Dutta of demanding money and harassing them.
