DIPHU/BAKALIAGHAT, May 23: Activists of All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) staged protest against the steep hike in fuel prices across Assam on Wednesday. In Karbi Anglong, activists of Diphu Regional Students Union (DRSU) burnt the effigy of Union minister for petroleum & natural gas, Dharmendra Pradhan to register their protest against the hike in prices of petrol and diesel.
The student body took out a rally from Diphu Club to public bus stand through the traffic point of in front of post office and burnt the effigy of Pradhan. The protesters also shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led NDA government in the Centre for its failure to check petrol and diesel prices.
Karbi Anglong District Students Union general secretary Tridip Bora said there has been a regular hike in the price of petrol and diesel in the country.
“Assam is an oil producing state. The state should get special relaxation for petrol, diesel prices. If the prices of petrol and diesel are not reduced, the AASU will not allow the transportation of oil from Assam to other parts of the country. If other northeastern states get concession in prices of petrol and diesel, why Assam is not getting it,” Bora questioned.
“If the price of petrol and diesel are not rolled back by the Centre, then AASU will take out a vigorous agitation against it,” he also said.
DRSU president Shorjun Hanse and general secretary Simanta Gogoi were among the leaders taking part in the protest.
Activists of Bakaliaghat Regional Students Union also burnt the effigy of Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan at bakaliaghat on Wednesday. BRSU president Mukul Hazarika and secretary Sanjay Singh were present in the protest.
Such protests were also carried out in Guwahati, Nagaon, Golaghat, Tezpur, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, Tinsukia, Bongaogaon and other parts of the state.
Activists of All Guwahati Students’ Union (AGSU) burnt effigy of Pradhan at Ujan Bazar in the city as part of the protest. The student body condemned the BJP-led Central government for not being able to control hike in prices of petroleum and diesel along with other essential commodities.
Demanding cut in fuel price taxes, AGSU general secretary Raifuddin Ahmed told reporters, “We urge the Central government to control hike in fuel prices otherwise we will be bound to take vigorous protest programme.”
In Sivsagar district, the Demow unit of the AASU also burned effigy of Union Petroleum Minister Pradhan as part of the statewide protest against fuel price hike.
In Biswanath district, Biswanath Chariali District Students union and Pavoi Regional Students Union jointly protested against the hike in fuel prices at Biswanath Chariali.
