NAMRUP, Aug 11: The Namrup unit of All Assam Student Union (AASU) regional committee in collaboration with the AASU central committee organised a sit-in-programme on Friday demanding immediate setup of BVFCL 4th unit in Namrup of Dibrugarh District.

At least 5000 people along with 40 other organisations gathered in front of BVFCL main gate to participate in the protest.

Participating in the protest, AASU central general secretary Lurinjyoti Gogoi slammed the central government for their lackadaisical attitude towards the setting up of the 4th plant at BVFCL despite making several promises.

“We have no option but to agitate to get our voices heard. The setting up of 4th unit is most important in Namrup in Dibrugarh district at any cost. In his 100 schedule agenda, the Prime Minister promised the immediate completion of BVFCL 4th unit, sending back of Bangladeshis from Assam after etc, but nothing happened yet,” Lurinjyoti said.

The unit being a main source of livelihood for at least 4500 local people should be dealt with at the earliest,” demanded the AASU leader.

Namrup Fertiliser Swramik Union (NFSU) General secretary Tileswar Borah said that the issue of BVFCL had been raised during a recent meeting of a BVFCL fertiliser team with the union fertiliser minister in New Delhi, but in vain. The National Chemical and Fertiliser Ltd showed disinterest in investing for the revival of BVFCL.

At the end of the day, a group of 30 AASU leaders and officials took a survey of the fertiliser industry to assess the condition of the units. A 10,000 signature memorandum was sent to the Prime Minister through district commissioner representative.
