DIPHU, Sept 30: Assam Gana Parishad (AGP) leaders were in Diphu to attend the ‘Party Workers Meet’ here at Diphu Club for re-structuring of party activities ahead of general elections.
AGP president and agriculture minister Atul Bora addressing party workers here on Sunday remembered former minister late Samsing Hanse from Karbi Anglong in the AGP government during the late 80s, when Prafulla Kumar Mahanta was chief minister. Bora said late Hanse has immense contribution to AGP party and he was the person who sought seed the AGP party in this hill district of Assam.
Bora said the AGP by any means cannot accept the Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2016 as it aimed to destroy the language, culture and customs of Assamese and other indigenous people of Assam. The AGP will oppose the Bill tooth and nail.
Bora also said, “AGP is a regional party in Assam and regional party only can know the problems and needs of indigenous people. The AGP party is concerned about the equal opportunity and development for the people of the hill districts. During last AGP government in State, it has transferred 30 departments from Dispur to Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC),” he said.
He urged that the people of Karbi Anglong should live together and work together and the AGP will always look for the development and prosperity of the hill districts.
Bora informed party leaders that as Congress is corrupt party and do not want to work with them. It is due to this reason in last State elections the AGP had formed alliance with the BJP.
Bora told party workers that the party would be contesting in Diphu Town Committee elections and asked for preparation.
Former party president and former chief minister of Assam, Prafulla Kumar Mahanta said AGP party need to be strengthened in the hill district for preservation of language, culture and tradition of indigenous communities as being a regional party.
Flood Control and Water Resource minister Keshab Mahanta also mentioned about the contribution given by AGP party to Karbi Anglong and urged for continued support to the party.
In the meeting, several party workers from other parties like BJP, Congress and ASDC joined AGP. Diphu district committee, BJP president, Samsing Kro told 270 party workers from other parties from both Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong joined AGP.
