State records 2 more deaths; Corona tally crosses 15,000-mark

GUWAHATI/ DIPHU, July 11: Two more persons died of COVID-19 at Gauhati Medical College & Hospital (GMCH) on Saturday taking the death toll in the pandemic in the state to 37, even as several prominent personalities including KMSS leader Akhil Gogoi have tested corona positive.

“Shanta Asharjee (40), a COVID patient with history of pneumonia, type-2 diabetes, hypothyroidism and admitted at GMCH, succumbed to her infection today. My deepest condolences. Death Audit Board to ascertain whether underlying cause of death is COVID19,” the state health minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said in a tweet.

In the morning another patient died at GMCH. “Nripen Debnath (55), a Covid-19 patient with history of kidney ailment, who came intubated & ventilated, and was admitted in GMCH ICU, passed away early this morning,” Sarma said in another tweet.

Guwahati continued to be the hotspot of COVID-19 cases in the state. 521 positive cases have been reported from the city on Friday night out of 936 cases detected in the state.

The COVID-19 count in the state now stands at 15,536.

Meanwhile, 578 patients were discharged after they tested negative for coronavirus on Saturday. Now the state has 5,072 active positive cases with 10,426 recoveries.

Activist Akhil Gogoi, who has been charged with sedition by NIA and is currently lodged in the Guwahati Central Jail, tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday, an official source said.

The development comes amidst a growing concern by political parties and civil society members about Gogoi’s health. He has been suffering from cough, fever and body aches over the last few days.

Akhil was later shifted to Gauhati Medical College & Hospital for treatment.

BJP MLA from Sadiya constituency, Bolin Chetia was among the fresh 936 positive patients. He has been admitted to the COVID-19 ward at Tinsukia Civil Hospital.

All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) supremo Maulana Badruddin Ajmal and his younger brother and former Lok Sabha MP Sirajuddin Ajmal also tested COVID-19 positive. Both of them are undergoing treatment at a hospital in Mumbai.


Karbi Anglong

8 more persons tested positive for COVID-19 in Karbi Anglong taking the total number of infected cases in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong to 223. The two districts have now 33 active cases after discharge of 187 patients from hospitals.

Of the fresh cases there are: Bapuram Teron (driver of KAAC secretary), Nirola Phangchopi (wife of EM Amarsing Tisso), Rebecca Rongpipi (wife of brother of Nirola Phangchopi), Vosik Phangchopi (maid), Gautam Hanse (Manja), Nirola Dutta (wife of Rana Dutta an agriculture employee) and Abhisek Rana Dutta (son), Kamsing Teron and a CRPF personnel of 155 Bn., Bokajan, Sourabh Shitarwar.

With this the number of positive cases in Karbi Anglong has reached 223, recovered 187, active 33 and deceased 3.

Due to the rising number of positive patients who do not have travel history, fear community transmission of the killer virus looms large in the twin hills. Several organisations have demanded total lockdown in both the hill districts to contain the spread of the virus.

Friday Market in Diphu town has already imposed a lockdown as the customers coming to the market are not maintaining social distancing norms.




As the total number of positive cases has risen to  in Morigaon, deputy commissioner Rituraj Bora has closed all weekly markets at Jagiroad, Laharighat, Moirabari and Bhuragaon to check mass gathering of the people.

The DC has also urged all section of people to strictly maintain social distancing norms to check the spread of the pandemic in the district.

Sixteen persons including seven CRPF jawans tested COVID-19 positive at Jagiroad on Saturday. Of them seven were from Kishore Club area. They are: Sankar Dey (42), Pompy Kar Dey (20), Suman Dey Dutta (34), Pratik Dutta (10), Suma Das (42), Isha Das (21) and Biswanath Das (68).

One Raju Das (54) who has been under quarantine, also tested positive for COVID-19 on Saturday. Another Mukut Das of Jhargaon also tested positive.


Biswanath Chariali

Seven new COVID-19 cases have been reported from different parts of Biswanath district on Saturday. They have been identified as Anamika Bora (a nurse of COVID-19 ward of Biswanath Chariali Civil Hospital), Akshya Jyoti Saikia (Sootea, Burachook), Biren Tanti (Mahajuli, Balichang), Chilan Telhan, Dibya Bharatia and Sakina Munda (Ambari) and Bhola Baskota (Samar Dalani). The figure of community transmission has reaches 52 in the district.

In addition to this, CEO of Sonitpur Zila Parishad Diganta Baishya has tested COVID-19 positive and was admitted to COVID care Hospital at Paruwa on Saturday.



68 fresh COVID-19 positive cases have been detected in South Assam’s Hailakandi district in the past 24 hours, taking the total tally to 474.

Seven more employees of DC’s establishment got afflicted with COVID-19 disease, taking the total employees affected to 15.

40 patients are undergoing treatment at SK Roy COVID-19 Hospital, 43 at MG Model Hospital, 6 at SMC&H, 47 at Algapur Model Hospital, 6 at HPC Guest House COVID-19 Care Centre and 15 under home isolation.

315 cured persons have been discharged from different hospitals. There are currently 157 active cases in the district. 1,257 persons are under 26 facility quarantine centres while 4,598 persons under home quarantine.
