AKRSU bandh hits normal life in BTAD

Kokrajhar, Sept 6: Normal life was affected due to 48-hour bandh call given by All Koch Rajbongshi Students Union (AKRSU-Pradeep Ray faction) in lower Assam districts, including four districts of BTAD on Wednesday.

Nine bandh supporters have been detained for blocking roads by burning tyres at Bijni in Chirang district during the bandh.

The bandh was called demanding Scheduled Tribe(ST) status to the Koch Rajbongshis and reconstruction of Kamatapur state. The bandh supporters were seen blocking National Highways in several places of Kokrajhar and Chirang district to stop vehicular movement. The protest was carried out at Bijni main road in Chirang, Mahabirstan Road in Bongaigaon, Goreswar Road in Baksa district.

Road communication was disrupted due to bandh. All schools and educational institutions, shops and business establishments remained closed during the bandh. The attendance in the government offices was thin. However, essential services like water, milk, medical, examinations were exempted from the purview of the bandh.

AKRSU president Pradeep Ray claimed that bandh was total and peaceful.  No untoward incident has so far been received during the first day of the bandh. The bandh will end on Thursday.
