BOKAJAN, Sept 14: Alleging severe anomalies in ongoing construction of an RCC bridge connecting Old ND Road with Balipathar Shyam Gaon along NH 39 in Karbi Anglong, the people of the village sought the intervention of governor Jagdish Mukhi to take action against the engineer and contractor engaged in construction of the bridge.
It was revealed from the RTI documents that the bridge is not being constructed according to the original estimate, but the executive engineer of PWD (roads) has changed the project estimate for the reasons best known to him.
An amount of Rs 1,64,13,246 was allocated for construction of the bridge to be constructed under Barpathar PWD (Road) Division in Silonijan.
However, the RTI document revealed that there were vast differences between the ongoing construction works with the original drawing, plan & estimate of the bridge, which is to connect at 15 cut-off villages.
Alleging substandard materials used in the construction work, Sarkari Gaon Bura Ganesh Singpho, said, “The contractor has used 16 of 20mm iron bar for construction of the pile column as against the estimated 22 of 25mm bars mentioned in the drawing. Again, the pile columns which were supposed to be at depth of 19m from ground are just standing at a elevation of 7-12m underground. Moreover, the pile cape has been installed unscientifically above the low water level as against the prescribed standard mentioned in drawing and plan & estimate.”
“We have been demanding for a concrete bridge over the river since long. The bridge has been sanctioned after 67 years of KAAC formation and we won’t let the contractor to compromise with the quality of works. We have faced the hardships for over six decades. We already wrote to governor to look into the matter and punish the erring contractor and department officials involved in this corrupt practice.” Singpho added.
