Extremists of KPLT anti-talk faction involved in killing rhinos in Kaziranga: Police
DIPHU, June 10: Apart from extortion and other crimes, the extremists of anti-talk faction Karbi People’s Liberation Tigers (KPLT) are also involved in killing of one-horned rhinos in Kaziranga National Park.
This came to light after apprehension of five anti-talk faction KPLT extremists from various places of Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao districts on Sunday night.
“Police carried out an operation following intelligence input that some miscreants have served extortion notes to some people in Karbi Anglong, West Karbi Anglong, Hojai, Dima Hasao and Golaghat districts,” deputy inspector general of police (DIGP) (central western range) Dilip Kumar Dey told reporters here Monday.
He claimed that anti-talk KPLT extremists were involved in rhino poaching and selling of rhino horns.
The five anti-talk KPLT leaders who were rounded up by the police in the past 72 hours are: “C-in-C” cum finance secretary Rongbin Ejang (36) alias Mensing Kramsa from Bibia Kro village, Rongmongve under Dokmoka PS, Bister Hanse (25) from Sarthe Teron, Jaipong under Dokmoka PS, Hetsing Phangcho (25) from Signanr village, Jaipong under Dokmoka PS, Jiten Kro (35) from Lakhan Bey, Jaipong under Dokmoka PS and Mathews Ronghi (38) from Choto Logal under Umrangso PS.
Acting on a tip off, a police team raided a lodge in Umrangso in Dima Hasao district on Sunday and apprehended the extremists.
According to police sources, the KPLT leaders were holed up in Umrangso for planning a bomb explosion apart from generating funds and recruitment of new cadres. The arrest of the top leaders is considered as a major blow to the anti-talk faction of the outfit.
Earlier, police arrested an anti-talk faction KPLT leader Ritesh Teron from Bakaliaghat. The “deputy C-n-C” of the outfit, Mensing Tokbi was arrested by Manja police on May 22.
“With the arrest of the five leaders, the police have busted the entire anti-talk faction KPLT in Karbi Anglong,” Dey claimed.
“The police recovered Rs 25 lakh from Mensing Kramsa apart from 27 SIM cards, 7.65 pistols with 2 magazines, .22 pistols with 2 magazines, 5 rounds of 7.65 live ammunitions, 46 rounds of .22 live ammunitions, six mobile handsets, some medicines, 5 iron chain with 2 locks and keys and some demand notes and pads of anti-talk KPLT from the arrested KPLT leaders,” the DIG said.
The operation was led by Karbi Anglong superintendent of police Gaurav Upaidhaya and additional SP Indranil Baruah.
