IMPHAL, Oct 16 (Newmai): All the arrested faculty members and students of Manipur University were released this evening from the judicial custody. The arrested persons, including 6 faculty members and 8 students, were released after the Chief Judicial Magistrate of Imphal West district disposed off the case.
Earlier, an understanding was brought between the Government and the agitating student organisations in a marathon meeting held late last night.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the State Government and the agitating student bodies in a meeting that dragged on till 1:30 am of October 16.
It can be noted here that the teachers and students of Manipur University were arrested after the “midnight raid” of the hostels in Manipur University campus in the intervening night of September 20 and 21 after Pro-Vice Chancellor, Yogindro Singh had lodged a complaint in a police station that he was “manhandled” by the teachers and the students.
Meanwhile, today’s development regarding the release of the arrested teachers and students from the judicial custody has come few days after the High Court of Manipur had intervened in the impasse by appointing an administrator of the varsity. As the agitating Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA), Manipur University Student Union (MUSU) and Manipur University Staff Association (MUSA) had welcomed the court decision to appoint an administration, the atmosphere in the varsity became conducive for dialogue.
It can also be recalled here that the MUSU had started the agitation from May 30, 2018 demanding an enquiry into the alleged administrative and financial irregularities under Prof AP Pandey, Vice Chancellor of Manipur University.

Biren Singh said that all the teachers and students arrested in connection with Manipur University issue will be released soon.
The chief minister was speaking as the chief guest at the inaugural function of the 6th All Manipur Catholic Schools Biennial Games and Sports Meet, 2018 at Catholic School, Canchipur on Tuesday.

Stating that his Government is a people-oriented Government, the chief minister said that doors of the present Government is always kept open for dialogues and talks to resolve any issue.
Meanwhile, lauding the service rendered to the society by Catholic Educational Society, Manipur (CESM), N. Biren Singh said that the CESM follows a distinctive educational philosophy and methodology which employ reason, loving kindness and religion as instruments of teaching. He said that the political community and the Church are autonomous and independent of each other in their own fields. Nevertheless, both are devoted to the personal vocation of man, he added.
There can be no education without dedication, the chief minister said while adding that it is this dedication which would bring success and happiness to the student community. It is also this dedication and sacrifice, which would condition the children for imbibing a culture of hard work, honesty and perseverance, he added.
