GUWAHATI, Nov 18: The Centre has directed Assam government for procurement of maximum food grains item like paddy etc. in the state.
In a letter to No. 001//M/KG/MCAFAPD dated November 16, 2018 to Assam government, the director of Ministry of consumer affairs food and public distribution, Kumar Gaurav has asked the state government to issue the necessary notification and to take step for maximum procurement of food grains item like paddy etc. in Assam.
Kumar Gaurav also requested to take step to avoid rejection of paddy in terms of moisture and size issue. He also requested Assam government to take step to use maximum local produce rice for distribution among BPL members.
“The government policy of procurement of food grains has broad objective of ensuring MSP to the farmers and availability of food grains to the weaker sections at affordable prices. It also ensures effective market intervention thereby keeping the prices under check and also adding to the overall food security of the country,” Gaurav told reporters here Sunday.
FCI, the nodal central agency, along with other state agencies undertakes procurement of wheat and paddy under price support scheme. Coarse grains are procured by state government agencies for Central Pool as per the direction issued by the Union government on time to time, he said.
The procurement under Price support is taken up mainly to ensure remunerative prices to the farmers for their produce which works as an incentive for achieving better production.
Before the harvest during each Rabi/Kharif crop season, the government announces the minimum support prices (MSP) for procurement on the basis of the recommendation of the Commission of Agricultural Cost and Prices (CACP) which along with other factors, take into consideration the cost of various agricultural inputs and the reasonable margin for the farmers for their produce.” He said.
