IMPHAL, Jan 13: Security forces had seized narcotics worth Rs 5.78 crore and apprehended a person in Manipur on Sunday.
According to reports, Tengnoupal battalion of 26 Sector Assam Rifles under the aegis of HQ IGAR (South) apprehended one narcotics smuggler carrying 1,44,000 WY tablets and 732 grams brown sugar worth approximately Rs 5.78 crore from Permanent Vehicle Check Post (PVCP), Khudengthabi.
Based on specific input received from reliable source of DRI regarding smuggling of contraband items, troops of Kudengthabi Post stopped a silver coloured Maruti Omini Van, bearing registration No MN-04A-8994 (silver colour) travelling from Moreh to Imphal for checking.
On carrying out a thorough checking of vehicle, blue coloured packets containing 1,44,000 tablets and orange colour powder packets suspected to be brown sugar weighing approximately 732 grams, were found hidden inside charcoal bags kept at the rear of the vehicle.
Security personnel had apprehended a person identified as Noor Khan hailing from Thoubal district while smuggling the narcotics.
A top official of Assam Rifles said that the WIY tablets were contained in 720 pouches weighing 15kg(including the plastic) and worth Rs 4.32 crore, while the brown sugar in 54 pouches worth approximately Rs 1.46 crore. The total worth of the seizure is approximately Rs 5.78 crore.
Recovered items along with the apprehendees were handed over to Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI), Imphal.
