DIPHU, Dec 4: The District Social Welfare Department, Karbi Anglong organised a 16-day programme on gender-based violence with the theme, ‘Orange the World’. The campaign is initiated by UN commencing from November 25-the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women and ends on December 10-Human Rights Day.
The campaign is supported by One Stop Centre (OSC), Mahila Shakti Kendra (MSK), Poshan Abhiyan and Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana (PMMVY).
As a part of the observation, a procession was taken out from the District Social Welfare office, Rongkhelan to Diphu market to educate the public about gender-based violence and the importance of women’s security. School children, women organisations members including Karbi Nimso Chingthur Asong and District Mahila Samiti participated in the procession.
Later an awareness meeting was held at Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park, where District Social Welfare officer (DSWO), Helen Terangpi said the programme has been chalked out by the government from November 25 to December 10. Minister Ajanta Neog flagged off the campaign on November 25. District wise rallies have been chalked out for campaign for elimination of violence against women girls.
“Today members of women’s organisations and school children have participated in the rally. A workshop on violence against women and girls will be organised on December 9. If there is no security for women then society cannot progress. So we want to respect and give security to women,” she said.
Women welfare officer, Shakti Kendra, Romali Teronpi, Centre administrator, OSC Ishta Terangpi and others spoke on the theme.
