SHILLONG, Aug 9:The United Democratic Party (UDP) has entrusted its senior most leader Bindo M Lanong the responsibility of leading the party till the new president is elected by the general council meeting which will be held next month.
The party has also decided to leave it to wisdom of the parliamentary party (PP) to decide on the post of Assembly Speaker.
Assembly Speaker and United Democratic Party president Dr Donkupar Roy passed away on July 28 at a private hospital in Delhi following a brief illness.
UDP general secretary Jemino Mawthoh said, “By virtue of him (Lanong) being the senior working president of the party, he will continue to lead the party till the new office bearers are elected in the general council.”
The general council of the party will be held on September 11 here.
Meanwhile, the central executive committee of the party has put forth its claim for the post of Speaker.
On this issue, Lanong, meanwhile, said the party has unanimously decided that the post should go to the UDP since the post was being held by late Dr Roy.
He said the party has also left it to the wisdom of the parliamentary party (PP) to decide on who among the 8 MLAs which include two associate members (SK Sunn and Samuel Sangma) will fill the Speaker’s position.
The party, with eight MLAs in the House of 60, is the biggest regional party supporting the BJP-backed Meghalaya Democratic Alliance led by the National People’s Party.
The party has also decided to announce its candidate for the Shella bye-poll on August 22 at a public meeting at Shella town.
According to Lanong, a family member of the former Speaker has expressed keenness in contesting the bye-poll.
