DIPHU, Jan 10: BJP has swept the town committee elections by winning 55 out of 64 wards in the recently-concluded elections to 9 town committees in Karbi Anglong and West Karbi Anglong districts, the results of which were announced on Thursday.
Of the seven wards in Bokajan Town committee, BJP bagged six while Congress managed to get only one seat. The Congress won Ward No. 1 seat.
Of 14 seats in Diphu Town Committee, the BJP won 9 seats and leading in four seats, while one seat went to an independent candidate.
BJP candidate Haradhon Ghosh has won from ward No. 1, Protibha Das Purkhyastha from Ward No. 2, Diganta Gogoi from Ward No. 3, Sadhana Rongpi won from Ward No. 4, Semson Terang from Ward No. 5, Minu Teronpi from Ward No. 6, Meera Tissopi from Ward No. 7 and Chatra Sing Teron won from ward No. 9.
Independent candidate Rustom Tokbi managed to win ward No. 8. The Counting of votes for wards No 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 continued till filing this report.
All the seven wards of Bakalia Town Committee went to the BJP. The winners according to their wards number are Hemsing Teron, Miniki Engtipi, Gautom Banik, Anita Saikia, Pranjal Sarmah, Raju Terang and Bijoy Hanse.
There are 6 wards in Langhin Town Committee. Of it only Wards No. 4 went to the poll that was won by an independent candidate Bijeswar Borah and the BJP managed to win all five constituencies.
In Dokmoka Town Committee, the BJP was able to capture all six constituencies. The winners are Rebeka Engtipi, Jitu Chanda, Prahalat Timung, Birensing Teron, Rupsing Teron and Sarlongki Tisso.
Of the five wards in Howraghat Town Committee, 3 were won by the ruling BJP, while one to an independent and the Congress managed to open an account by winning one seat.
Of seven ward constituencies of Baithalangso Town Committee in West Karbi Anglong district, BJP won four seats, two by Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC) and one by an independent candidate. The winning BJP candidates are Chitra Bahadur Newar (Wards No. 3), Harsing Rongphar (Ward No. 4), Chandra Ronghang (Ward No. 6) and Pradip Terang (Ward No. 7). ASDC won in ward No. 1 and 2, the winners are Rajeswar Bey and Lipson Hanse.
The BJP made a clean sweep of all the seven wards in Hamren Town Committee. The winners according are Basa Teron, Longkendra Hanse, Biren Tisso, Lahorsing Kro, Dilip Hanse, Purnima Hansepi and Headsing Rongphar.
Of the five wards in Donkamukam Town Committee, the ruling BJP won four and Congress managed to get 1 seat. The winners for the BJP are: Rensing Timung (wards no. 1), Tilisram Ronghang (Ward no. 2), Jitu Terang (Ward no. 3) and Selongki Bey (Ward no. 4). Congress candidate Lolit Tokbi managed to win won Ward no. 5.
Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chief executive member (CEM) Tuliram Ronghang congratulated all the winning candidates and said it is due to good works done by the BJP-led government, the people voted the party to the power.
“The result reflects the people’s gratitude for the wave of development ushered in under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and chief minister Sarbanda Sonowal,” he said.
