GUWAHATI, March 14: Will Bidyasing Engleng be the BJP’s candidate for Autonomous Districts constituency in the upcoming Lok sabha elections? The former MLA of the Congress, Engleng who jumped to the BJP in the early part of this year has been shortlisted by the State Screening Committee of the BJP on Thursday as the candidate for the upcoming elections.
Along with Engleng, Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) executive member (EM) Horensing Bey was also shortlisted as a candidate for the upcoming poll. The screening committee of the saffron party has selected two to three names for each of the 10 consistencies, where the BJP will field its candidate, sources here said.
The candidates are Rameshwar Teli and Pulak Gohain from Dibrugarh; Topon Gogoi, Kamakhya Prasad Tasa and Shantanu Gogoi from Jorhat; Pradan Barua and Haren Deori from Lakhimpur; Himanta Biswa Sarma and RP Sharma from Tezpur and Rupak Sarma, Rajen Gohain and Angoorlata Deka from Nagaon constituencies.
Similarly, Queen Oza, Jayanta Malla Barua and Hemanga Thakuria from Guwahati; Ramen Deka and Dilip Saikia from Mangaldai; Rajdeep Rai and Dilip Paul from Silchar and Kripanath Malla and Amaresh Rai from Karimganj have been shortlisted as probable candidates for the elections.
The BJP has formed the penal to finalise the candidates for the upcoming election. Speaking to media persons, Assam finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, “Out of the 14 seats, the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF) will field candidate in Kokrajhar. We will declare the final list of the candidates on March 16.”
Two months after pulling out over the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016, the AGP and BJP are back as allies in poll-bound Assam. The list of AGP candidates for the elections will be announced on March 17.
A delegation of the AGP will fly to New Delhi on Friday to finalise the seat-sharing deal with BJP national president Amit Shah.
“The AGP is going to push for five Lok Sabha seats and one Rajya Sabha seat. On March 16, the AGP delegation will hold talks with Shah regarding seat-sharing,” AGP general secretary Ramendra Narayan Kalita told reporters here.
“The BJP assured not to take up the Bill issue without consulting the AGP.” “The BJP and AGP have decided to work together in the coming Parliament election in Assam to defeat Congress. The BPF will be the third partner in the alliance. We will together ensure that Congress is defeated in all the 14 seats of Assam,” BJP general secretary Ram Madhav announced on March 12. The Lok Sabha elections in Assam will be held in three phases on April 11, 18 and 23. The results of the election will be announced on May 23.
