DIPHU, April 18: Unknown miscreants lobbed a grenade at a truck in the heart of Bakalia Town in Karbi Anglong district at around 7:40 pm on Wednesday causing panic in the run up to the second phase of Lok Sabha elections to be held on Thursday.
According to the report, the miscreants lobbed the grenade at a stationery 407 truck, which was parked along NH 36 near the residence of the owner Anil Gupta. The incident took place at a stone’s throw distance of an office of Congress party. The truck was partially damaged due to the impact.
Interestingly, a little known insurgent organisation Dimasa National Liberation Front has also called for a 36-hour bandh of Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao bandh from 5pm of Wednesday.
The truck owner suspected that there was a political motive behind the incident. Senior police and security officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation ahead of the second phase of voting.
In Karbi Anglong, People’s Democratic Council of Karbi Longri (PDCK) led by former NDFB-S chief Songjit Ingti Kathar is active from last year. Karbi Anglong has a history of forming insurgent organisations just before an election and interfering in campaigning.
In 2014 Lok Sabha elections, when the BJP was in the opposition, United People’s Liberation Army (UPLA) was formed in Karbi Anglong led by Nikunja Kathar, a former mid-level leader of now disbanded United People’s Democratic Solidarity (UPDS). The UPLA went on to intimidate BJP supporters in West Karbi Anglong by firing at the vehicles of BJP supporters who were on their way to BJP meeting which was addressed by now Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal at Baithalangso.
