Bokajan police foil extortion bid, two college student held

Bokajan, Aug 17: The police have arrested two college going students on charges of extortion and blackmailing in Bokajan late on Wednesday.

The arrested duo had demanded Rs 4 lakh from Jagdish Dutta, a vegetable vendor, threatening to kidnap his son if he failed to meet their demand. The arrested students have been identified as Rahul Dutta of Rehabari, Guwahati and Amit Dutta -a neighbour of victim Jagdish Dutta of Sukhanjan. Both are student of B Com 3rd semester in Arya Vidyapeeth College in Guwahati.

“They first demanded Rs 4 lakh from Jagdish over telephone and the amount was later settled at Rs 35 thousand after rounds of negotiations. The duo had also directed Jagdish to drop the cash in the second last compartment of Guwahati-bound Intercity Express. Rahul was caught when came to receive the cash from Dimapur Railway Station. Amit was later picked up from his home on the basis of input provided by Rahul,” a police officer said.
