Protest over Chaygaon naked dance incident
BOKO, June 10: Several hundreds of people representing various communities and organisations took out a protest rally condemning the Chaygaon naked dance case and demanded strict action against the culprits.
The organisations, including Kamrup District Rabha Association, Mahila Parishad Samiti, South Kamrup Students’ Union stormed the national highway here by holding placards and banners and shouting slogans like ‘We condemn harassment against artists’, ‘Stop Bangladeshi culture’.
The protesters also submitted a memorandum to the Kamrup deputy commissioner demanding justice for the artists and punishment to the miscreants.
“The culprits should be severely punished so that such incidents do not occur in future,” said an irked protester.
A dance group, comprising of 42 dancers lodged an FIR with the Chaygaon police on June 8 alleging ‘harassment’ and ‘molestation’ by the organisers of a function held at Chaygaon’s Asolpara in Kamrup district. In the FIR the group alleged that “the female dancers were asked to undress and dance in front of around 700 people”.
Expressing concern over the incident, finance minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said on Sunday that the government would conduct a probe into the incident.
Representatives of six organisations, including All Rabha Students Union (ARSU), Rabha Women Federation (RWF), South Kamrup Students Union (SKSU), South Kamrup Bodo Students Union (SKBSU) took part in the rally.
The rally, which began from Daktuapara culminated Borpara. The protesters also submitted a memorandum to Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal demanding justice to the victim artist.
Meanwhile, the Chaygaon police have arrested two persons in connection with the incident. The duo are Shahrukh Khan and Subhahan Khan.
On the other hand, National women commission (NCW) has decided to register a suo motu case in connection with the incident.
“Talked to DGP Assam just now. He said the FIR is been registered and 2 of the accuseds got arrested. Told him to do proper inquiry and arrest the organisers. @NCWIndia has taken suo motu and is in touch with SSP also. Will keep everyone posted,” NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma tweeted on Monday.
