JORHAT, Dec 20: Four persons were hospitalised with serious injuries after two groups clashed at the Harijan Colony here on Monday. Police picked up three people in this connection.
As per an eyewitness’s account the near lynching incident was averted due to the timely intervention of the police. The source said that three youths: Ramesh Basfor alias Posa, Munmun Tanti and Badal Tanti were debarred from entering the colony as they had been involved in anti-social activities which included drugs and gambling.
Both men and women came out to obstruct their entry when the clash erupted with stone pelting and beating with sticks. The police managed to break up the melee but not before several persons were injured, two motorcycles were totally damaged.
The police were also berated for letting go of the three who were spoiling the environment of the colony.
Ramesh Basfor had been arrested earlier on several criminal charges. Tension spread to other parts of the area as shops downed their shutters.
