DIPHU, Nov 7: To highlight the issues such as unemployment, unprecedented economic slowdown, rise in prices of essential commodities, collapse of the banking system and farmers distress, the Congress in Karbi Anglong staged a dharna at Semson Sing Ingti Memorial Park here on Thursday.
Several dozens of leaders and workers of Karbi Anglong District Congress Committee (KADCC) protested against the anti-people economic policies and decisions of the Narendra Modi-led NDA government at the Centre.
“The Congress workers and its volunteers are raising the voice of the people and trying to make this insensitive central government accountable for the countless miseries and sufferings that it is causing,” Congress leader and former deputy chairman of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC), Mukesh Kumar Chauhan said.
“The BJP government is infested with corruption. They are liars and betrayers. The appointments are not made on merit basis under KAAC. Those who got appointment gave Rs 5 lakh to Rs 10 lakh. For appointment of TET qualified teachers Rs 5 lakh to Rs 7 lakh were collected from each candidate by the elected members. During the Congress government not even a single rupee was collected from TET teachers”, Chauhan said.
“We need to go to every village and inform them about the failure of BJP government. We should not be disheartened as BJP is not going to rule any longer and the good days for the Congress are coming. We will continue to expose the failure of the BJP and protest against their anti-people’s policy”, he said.
Criticizing Assam government’s policy of two-child norm, former executive member (EM) and KADCC vice president Ashok Teron said the state government has announced that those having more than two children will be denied government jobs. “If two children policy is adopted the number of hill tribes will be reduced to minority,” he said.
BJP is coming up with the uniform civil code (UCC) for one religion, one language and one nation policy, he said adding that UCC will snatch away the age-old traditions and rituals of the Karbis.
Karbi Anglong District Mahila Congress (KADMC) Kasang Terangpi, vice president Pran Kumar Dutta and former MLA Klengdoon Engti also took part in the protest.
