Will Suman Haripriya be able to repeat 2016 performance?

GUWAHATI, April 1: The Congress seems to be in an advantageous position in Hajo constituency, but much depends on Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP).

With the AJP going for an all out campaign with the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act, the otherwise BJP voters, who have been irked over CAA might go in favour of AJP giving an edge to the BJP. The Hajo constituency is all set to go for polls in the third phase of the Assam Assembly election along with 39 other assembly seats on April 6.

Notably, Hajo is an ancient pilgrimage centre for three religions – Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam. The area is dotted with a number of ancient temples as well as other sacred artefacts.

The most famous being the Barmaqam Powa Makkah which is an ancient mosque and contains the shrine of a Muslim preacher. Hajo has been a standing testimony of Religious harmony in the state and the region with all the communities living together in a state of peaceful co-existence.

Though the Congress reigned in the constituency, in 2016 elections, it had to make way for the BJP candidate Suman Haripriya who won by defeating Congress candidate Dulu Ahmed by a margin of 8,903 votes. Given the fact that the overwhelming Modi wave had swept the state back then which is dimming over time, retaining the seat might be a tough task for the saffron camp. While talking to a cross section of voters it is understood that the BJP was able to polarise votes in the 2016 election by its Hindutva agenda. Additionally, it made the most of votes being split by the AGP candidate Nurul Hussain which dented the Congress camp in 2016.

However, in 2021 Dulu Ahmed is contesting on an AJP ticket after being denied a ticket by the Congress.

Meanwhile, Congress itself has fielded a fresh face Anowar Hussain, who but enjoys a good support of Hindu and Muslim voters both. Nevertheless, the CAA is a key issue in the Hajo constituency and if AJP manages to chuck in 20,000 votes or above, the BJP might be able to narrowly sweep the seat for the second time. However, if the AJP fails to draw the attention of the people, Congress victory is almost certain.
Speaking to ‘The Hills Times’, Hussain said, “This time the saffron brigade has failed to polarise the voters. Hindus and Muslims are working unitedly with me. CAA is the key issue here. However, we are focusing on unemployment and underdevelopment of the constituency as well in this election. In the last five years, BJP has done nothing for the constituency, thereby, depriving the people. Only Congress can solve the unemployment problem and bring peace and development in the region,” he added.
He added that he would work to make and promote Hajo as an international tourist destination if voted to power.

However, dissidence within the Congress is a major factor which will have an impact in the election result. Dulu Ahmed, who was suspended from Congress for his revolt against the party leaders against the electoral alliance with AIUDF might also impact negatively in the Congress vote percentage. “Congress will face a disastrous defeat in the ensuing elections due to the inefficiency of its present leadership,” Ahmed quipped.
