Tezpur, March 22: A fierce ballot battle between AGP and Congress is likely to take place in Tezpur LAC. Notably, there are as many as 6 candidates including an independent in the constituency including Alok Nath (Raijor Dal), Janmoni Bora (AJP), Prithbiraj Rabha (AGP), Anuj Mech (INC) and Sheikh Mohammed Sadiq (Independent). Apart from AGP and INC, all the other candidates and parties are more or less debuting in the election. Therefore, the main contest is between Congress and AGP in Tezpur with the newer parties having little or no impact in the vote percentage.

Meanwhile, in the 71 Dhekiajuli LAC, present incumbent Ashok Singhal is facing a tough challenge from the Congress candidate. Notably, Benudhar Nath from Congress, Ranjoy Basumatari from VPI, Sanjay Dey from BJP and Satrughna Sasoni from AJP are contesting for the seat while Tarun Sahu and Jagyaram Mirdha are independent candidates in the fray.

As per the data, Tezpur has a total of 2,07,267 electors out of which 70,000 are tea workers, 42,000 Bodos, 21,000 religious minorities, 29,000 linguistic minorities, 14,000 Nepalese, 15,267 Assamese and 16,000 Hindi speaking voters in Dhekiajuli LAC.

Political observers maintain that in the present political scenario, the situation seems to be tight for Ashok Singhal. This HT correspondent visited minority pockets and tea garden areas extensively and upon studying the mindset of tea workers and other communities understood that many are disappointed with Singhal’s policies in the past. This is favouring the Congress big time and they are leaving no stones unturned to re-occupy the seat.
