BISWANATH CHARIALI, July 30: At least 14 people, including the officer-in-charge of Jamugurihat police station Pranjal Nath and circle officer of Naduar Revenue Circle, Akashdeep Kakaty were injured in a clash between two groups at Chakighat area, southern part of Jamugurihat at around 1 pm on Thursday.
The injured have been shifted to the hospital. Following the attack, the police resorted to lathicharge on the group to disperse them from the spot.
The incident took place when a team of an agri farm “Kanayaka” accompanied by police and revenue officials went to the area to take possession of a plot of land which was allotted to them.
As soon as they reached the site, a group of people who have illegally settled in the place attacked them in a bid to prevent them taking the possession of the land. The group belonging to doubtful citizens have been encroaching the plot for several years at the very nose of police and revenue officials.
Even as the district administration had conducted several eviction drives, the group of people managed to encroach the plot somehow.
BJP MLA from Sootea Padma Hazarika visited the spot and condemned the attack on the police and revenue officials. Sonitpur superintendent of police (SP) Nomal Mahato also visited the site to take the stock of the situation.
“We have registered a case. We will book all the culprits involved in the incident,” the SP told media persons here.
