‘Action against those who demand Ripun’s removal likely’
GUWAHATI, May 26: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) vice president and MP elect from Nowgong Lok Sabha constituency, Pradyut Bordoloi on Sunday claimed that religious polarisation by votes has led to defeat of Congress in most of the Lok Sabha constituencies in the state in the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections.
“BJP has been successful in creating religious polarisation in the society while campaigning for the recently-concluded Lok Sabha elections,” Bordoloi, who won the Nowgong Lok Sabha seat, said addressing a press conference here on Sunday.
Bordoloi won the seat by defeating his nearest BJP rival Rupak Sarma by a margin of 16,752 votes in the neck to neck contest. Bordoloi secured 7,39,724 votes while Sarma 7,22,972 votes in the elections. However, he admitted that there might have been some faults in the Congress party due to which the people of the state had not voted for the party in most of the constituencies.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP chief Amit Shah, the party has been successful in creating a religious polarisation among the people across the country. BJP leader Jayanta Malla Baruah had earlier said the Congress would not win the Nagaon seat as a large number of Hindu people reside there. Baruah’s speech is a solid proof that the saffron party has always been trying to create a religious rift among the people,” Bordoloi said.
He claimed that he had received almost 51 per cent of votes in the constituency which has only 34 per cent Muslim voters. “If Nagaon has only Muslim people then from where I received so many votes in the Lok Sabha polls,” he asked.
Bordoloi further claimed that every section of people in Nagaon, irrespective of their caste, creed and religion, had voted for him otherwise it would have been impossible for him to win the election.
Bordoloi claimed that apart from Bahrampur, he had got maximum number of votes from Assembly constituencies like Nagon, Hojai and Lumding. He added that no candidate of the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) contested from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat, it had been quite beneficial for the Congress. He claimed that some AIUDF leaders had even asked the people of Nagaon to vote for the BJP. He further added that action must be taken against some senior Congress politicians, who had demanded removal of APCC president Ripun Bora.
