Haflong, June 14: Flash floods and landslides, triggered by torrential rains, continued to wreak havoc in Dima Hasao district on Thursday forcing the Northeast Frontier Railway to suspend all trains through hill section. Two persons- mother and her child were killed in landslides while three persons went missing due to flash flood in the hill district on Thursday.
Dima Hasao district administration has announced closure of all schools due to the rainfall and movement of any person in the neighbour due to rain and landslide.
According to the report, a woman and her child were buried in the landslide in Hangrum village on Thursday.
Altogether 166 houses were fully damaged in Mahur. Moreover, the rising level of water in Haflong submerged Moulhoi, Sompijnag, Digrik, Mahadev Tilla and Lake View road completely.
The heavy rainfall triggered heavy landslides in several location in railway track between Lumding and Badarpur, especially at Dauthuja, Phaiding, Mahur railway station causing heavy damage to track. The flood water washed away 200 metre rail tracks in between New Haflong station and Jatinga Lampu station near tunnel No 3 on Thursday. The damages have been reported at tunnel No 9 and 10 forcing the railway authorities to cancel all trains through the hill section between Silchar-Lumding.
Railway sources said train service will be restored only after the tracks are repaired, which might take several hours depending on weather condition.
The incessant rain also triggered landslide in several parts of the district led to transitory blockade in Guwahati- Haflong road via Dehangi and NH-54 between Haflong- Mahur- Lumding (N.Leikul) and Harngajao-Silchar (Kapurcherra, Retzawl, Jatinga-Lampu and Bandarkhal) apart from Mahur-Laisong road, where a bridge connecting Laisong Hajaichak was collapsed.
On the other hand, one truck and two dumpers along with eight persons went missing due to flash flood in Mahur river at Kalachand. However six persons were rescued with the help of locals and personnel of Fire and Emergencies Services. Three persons have been missing till filing this report.
A temple, a truck and several schools were washed away by flood water of in Jatinga River in Ditokcherra. Many residents of Harangajao have shifted to safer locations due to rise of water level of Jatinga River on Thursday.
Meanwhile, NF Railway authorities informed that restoration work has been completed in five locations in the Lumding – Badarpur hill section. Work is still in progress in between New Haflong – Jatingalampur (landslide of extent 30 m length & 1.5 m height) and New Haflong – Jatingalampur (landslide of extent 40 m length & 3 m height).
The railway authorities have cancelled the 55616 Guwahati – Silchar Fast passenger between Lumding and Silchar, 55616 Silchar – Guwahati Fast passenger in view of the landslides. The 25657 Sealdah – Silchar Kanchanjungha Express was controlled at Lumding, 15658 Agartala – Sealdah Kanchanjungha Express was controlled at Badarpur, 14019 Agartala – Anand Vihar Tripura Sundari Express has been rescheduled to start at 5 pm and 12508 Silchar – Trivandrum Express has been rescheduled to start at 10 pm, an NF Railway release informed here on Thursday.
