Leaders urge CM to ensure security to them till panchayat poll is over
DHEMAJI, Nov 18: Strong dissension is brewing in Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Dhemaji district over pre-poll alliance with Sanmilito Gana Sakti (SGS) in Jonai assembly segment.
Several disgruntled BJP workers, including woman members of Jonai gheraoed Dhemaji District BJP president’s residence at Jonai on Sunday afternoon and attacked by pelting stones.
Later, police and CRPF on being informed rushed to the spot and controlled the situation by dispersing the mob. The residential building was partly damaged in the attack. But, luckily, president Rupa Kaman and other family members were not at home during mob attack.
The police however, not yet to arrest any person in this regard. On November 11, deprived BJP members gheraoed Lakhimpur MP Pradan Baruah and District BJP president Rupa Kaman and other state leaders at Silapthar Hotel to register their grievances and blocked them for several hours. The dissident members also vandalized two BJP mandal offices in Jonai block and burnt down party flags and other office materials.
The saffron party members are infuriated over the fact that their party high command in the name of pre-poll alliance with regional political group SGS thereby leaving all panchayat seats to them in Jonai block.
Terming poll-alliance as “imprudent” and “pessimistic” act of the party bigwigs, they dissident BJP workers alleged that party high command are disgracing the dedicated BJP activists, who have been working in the party for last several decades.
When contacted, district BJP president Rupa Kaman said the decisions regarding poll alliance was made by state BJP committee and she had nothing to do in this regard.
“A few party tickets were wrongly issued by district BJP committee to contest the poll in Jonai block, but state committee subsequently rejected the tickets in the wake of alliance with SGS. The state committee further issued a letter to election department here for disqualification of BJP nominees, who have filed nominations papers with BJP ticket in Jonai block”, the district president informed.
Meanwhile, Dhemaji district BJP committee informed Pradesh BJP functionaries about the prevailing situation. The leaders also informed the incident to chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal and pleaded him to ensure adequate safety and security to the district level BJP leaders until the situation is improved.
