Ex-UPDS leader Ananda Terang passes away

DIPHU, Sept 13: Former defence secretary of disbanded United Peoples Democratic Solidarity (UPDS) and present general secretary of Ex UPDS Welfare Society Ananda Terang (56) breathed his last following prolonged illness at his resident at Chephongsajir at around 3 am on Wednesday.

Deceased Terang was suffering from diabetes. He was one among the signatories of MoS by UPDS with the Centre and the state government on November 25, 2011.

Terang was born to late Bordoloi Terang and Kachep Rongpipi of Koronga (Phulbari) in Golaghat district on August 15, 1961.

His education started from Union Christian English School, Diphu in 1976. His family said that he was retired from Assam Rifles. He was a boxer and had become a national coach for boxing through the Assam Rifles.

In the midst of Autonomous State movement in 1986 in Karbi Anglong launch by erstwhile Autonomous State Demand Committee (ASDC), two extremist organisations came up – the Karbi People’s Front (KPF) and Karbi National Volunteers (KNV) in 1994. But in 1999 the two groups came together to form UPDS.

Terang was the first defence secretary of the UPDS. He also held other posts like joint secretary, commander-in-chief and home secretary of the extremist organisation.

Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council (KAAC) chairman and former general secretary, UPDS Horensing Bey paid his last respect to Terang at his residence. In his condolence message, Bey said late Terang has not thought for his own, he has contributed to the cause of Karbi society.

He leaves behind a son and two daughters and wife. Funeral service will be held on September 14 at the deceased’s residence and will be buried at City Baptist Church cremation ground.
