KOKRAJHAR, Aug 12: Farmers from greater Salakati area here have expressed their concern and helplessness over the damage of paddy crop in large scale due the flow of poisonous chemicals mixed with oil and water from NTPCs project Salakati to hundreds of bighas of paddy fields in lower Assam’s Kokrajhar district.
The plant’s poisonous mixture has already damaged the paddy production of hundreds of bighas of nearby paddy fields creating a fear psychosis among the farmers. Villages from greater Salakati area, Bamunigaon, Pakriguri,Putiagaon, Tataguri and Salakati are the worst affected. The paddy crop appears to be burnt and have also led to the death of fishes in nearby ponds.
Farmers from Salakati have submitted a memorandum to NTPC authorities and Deputy Commissioner, Kokrajhar in this regard for their intervention.
Gautam Roy, a farmer from Bamunigaon has lost his entire production said that the entire productions in his fields appear burnt and are totally damaged.
A team of NTPC officials rushed to the spot to take stock of the situation and assured that necessary measures will be initiated.
